Opening up and yet setting boundaries can be a problem. You do not want to shut people up; nor do you want needless arguments to waste everyone’s time. If you are at a new place, have an open discussion to understand the culture, expectations and apprehensions. Let them know the approach you plan to adopt. Lay down ground rules with everyone’s consent. Encourage value addition; discourage arguments for the sake of it. Once the discussions are done, it is your responsibility and prerogative to take the final decision. Everyone owns this decision. Everyone helps implement it efficiently, regardless of his or her stance during the discussion.
