Leaders need to listen twice before they talk once. Their strength is in their team. And they must listen and encourage opinions if that team is to get stronger. Listen and teach to listen. A patient listener offers greater value than an impatient orator.
The other day, a CEO told me about a problem leader in his team. He had great ideas, and always got the work done on time. But he did not let others talk.
With most people working from home, others simply muted their microphones, when he came on.
Word reached the CEO that this was seriously affecting morale. Something had to be done, without demotivating him.
I suggested a small exercise. Put him charge of developing the virtual communication skills of his deputies.
Everyone made a small presentation for 10 minutes. Then others discussed it. The talkative leader got to talk only for the last five minutes. I joined the first few sessions. I tactfully discouraged him whenever he threatened to interrupt a conversation. Gradually he learnt to listen.
Within a month, there was an audible change. During meetings, he spoke only after everyone else. Even more remarkably, he thanked those who had put forth some valuable opinions.
We have been given just one mouth but two ears. For a good reason. Leaders need to listen twice before they talk once.
